Driving Maximum Value from Assets

Asset Performance Management
Driving Maximum Value from Assets
Author: Peter G. Martin, PhD, Vice President and Invensys Fellow

What’s Inside this Whitepaper
1. Background
2. Root of the Conflict
3. Asset Performance Measures
4. Asset Performance Improvement
5. Conclusion

The conflict (Section2) between maintenance and operations teams in industrial operations is not very surprising, once it becomes apparent how the performance of each team is measured.

In industrial operations in which operations and maintenance performance are measured, the most common measure for maintenance is asset availability, while the most common measure for operations is asset utilization.

How many maintenance technicians does it take to change a light bulb?

What is Maintenance?

Author: Victor Lough, Product Manager, Asset Management

In our March 11th blog posting, Avantis discussed how alignment with maintenance best practises could actually reduce energy costs. In this posting we shall take a step back to consider the question “What is Maintenance for?” This is a question that should have a focus on the “customer” and not simply an actuarial question of cutting costs. It has been reported (13th March 14, The Daily Telegraph) that it took more than 40 workers at Cambridge City Council (UK) three years to change a street light, which then failed two weeks later. Months after the repeat failure the resident is still waiting for this to be rectified. A spokesman for Cambridge City council said they were investigating the problem.

How can standards help reduce your energy costs?

Author: Victor Lough, Product Manager, Asset Management

In my February 25th blog posting, Avantis discussed the emerging ISO 55000 standard and how this would drive change in the way of doing business. We did suggest that adaption would be the preferred policy with a view that this would drive bottom line performance, in line with previous quality initiatives.

My attention was therefore drawn to a recent blog on behalf of Frost & Sullivan, London – 6 March, 2014: Water and Wastewater Industry’s drive to optimise energy usage and reduce costs sustains European Smart Pumps Market (http://www.industrialautomation.frost.com). It pointed to a Euro 2020 directive for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels, which would point to external stakeholders driving change.

FSMA is a prevention-based, modern food safety system that embraces preventing food safety problems  as the foundation of a modern food safety system.
